Classroom Incivilities overruled

Manoj, Samprit, Pritam, and Mallayya were in class 4 at National school, Bhahargaun. These were the browbeating boys and a carefree team of troublemakers to their class teacher. Their class teacher had decided to teach them life lessons and bring discipline to them. That day when the class teacher entered the class, it was shocking to see that these four boys were playing in class with rockets made of paper. “What is going on in class here?”, the teacher yelled at the class. For that, JK said, “Madam, these boys are tearing the papers from their notebooks and making paper rockets, then flying in the air”. The teacher stared straight at the four boys and knew it was time to make the boys realize their behavior.” His bag is full of paper rockets madam”, Hobie said opening Mallayya’s bag. Teacher took aside the four boys and told them a few things to get the next day.

“Get these things tomorrow”, the teacher asked each student to get few materials. “Manoj, you get an empty plastic bottle. Samprit get a bottle vinegar. Pritam will get baking soda. Mallayya will get 3 new pencils”.

Next day, all the four students were ready with the materials. The teacher asked them to place them all on her table. The whole class was curious to know what the teacher had as punishment for their mates.

“Mallayya, sharp these pencils”, the teacher handed over the pencils to Mallayya. “Now, attach the pencils to the bottle, one by one”.

The teacher helped Samprit to attach the pencils to the bottle with a glue tape with the ends of the pencils come up past the top of the bottle.

“Why the pencils madam?”,when Jiyeon asked, the teacher replied “The pencils will help us to stand the bottle up on its top”.

The teacher took out a tissue paper from her vanity bag, “Pritam, put two tablespoons of baking soda in this tissue and roll it up. Make sure that the sides are folded over so that no baking soda is exposed.” and Pritam did as his teacher instructed him.

“Mallayya, fill the bottle with vinegar”, teacher instructed and Mallayya filled the bottle to more than half with vinegar.

“Manoj, now drop the baking soda packet into the vinegar when i count 3. I must warn you at this step that, you will need to move back quickly as the tissue will unravel The reaction will start as soon as the baking soda comes in contact with the vinegar”.

All the students watched with their eyes open as the tissue opened and the baking soda reacted with vinegar. More and more gas built inside the bottle. This forced the cork out from the bottom of the rocket. That force will propel the rocket off from the table and into the air.

“Woah!!”, all the students exclaimed in unison. They were excited to watch a rocket launch up in air.

The teacher smiled, “Was this not interesting? Than to disturb the whole class?”, asked the teacher to the four students.

The distracting 4 did understood on how their knowledge can be useful in exploring better things.

P.S.

  1. Do not try this at home.
  2. The vinegar is acidic and will react with the basic baking soda to neutralize. Carbon dioxide will be produced in this reaction, which will cause pressure to build inside the bottle.
